Project Overview:
This project involved the complete fabrication of a specified aluminum part, emphasizing manual machining, precise setups, and quality control. The process provided hands-on experience with key machining operations, including facing, turning, taper turning, undercutting, milling, and reaming, using standard machine tools in a controlled lab environment.
Materials & Tools:
Material: Aluminum cylinder
Machines Used:
Powered Band Saw – Cutting to length
Lathe – Facing, turning, taper turning, and drilling
Milling Machine – Creating indentations
Manufacturing Process:
Selected aluminum cylinder and cut to length using the band saw. Turned cylinder to specifications on the lathe, including facing and taper turning. Created precise indentations on the part using the milling machine.
Challenges & Observations:
Maintaining alignment during taper turning was challenging.
Achieving the correct indentation depth required careful setup. Most part dimensions met specifications, with only minor length deviations. Machines operated reliably, and minimal tool wear was observed.
Analysis & Lessons Learned:
Accurate machine setups are critical to meeting dimensional specifications. Calculations should be triple-checked to optimize results. Cutting parameters can be further refined to improve precision and efficiency.
Outcome:
Successfully applied fundamental machining techniques to produce a functional aluminum part meeting most design specifications while reinforcing the importance of setup accuracy, measurement, and process planning.
